Recent Evolution of Coastal Tidal Flats and the Impacts of Intensified Human Activities in the Modern Radial Sand Ridges, East China

Abstract: The coastal tidal flats of the modern Radial Sand Ridges (RSRs) are typical silt-muddy tidal flats in Central Jiangsu Province. These tidal flats play a critical role in coastline protection and biodiversity conservation, and against storm surges, but have recently been displaying drastic changes in geomorphic dynamics because of human activities. However, a comprehensive understanding of spatiotemporal changes in tidal flats in RSRs remains lacking. Hence, we employed a novel remote sensing method by obtainin… Show more

“…Since the Yellow River moved to the Bohai Sea due to natural destruction in 1855, the source of sediment from the Yellow River into the South Yellow Sea has been greatly reduced, and the hydrodynamic conditions of the Dongsha Shoal have changed [ 53 , 54 ]. As a result, the radial sand ridge has entered an unprecedented adjustment stage, causing severe ocean erosion and coastline retreat on the central coast of Jiangsu and the west side of the Dongsha Shoal [ 55 , 56 ]. This is also the driving force for the overall eastward migration of the sand ridge line.…”

“…2 ) (Ma et al 2020 ; Wang et al 2020 ), and salt pans display obvious shape characteristics, mainly shaped as contiguously distributed and regular rectangles. eCognition9.0 can be used to extract the aspect ratios and rectangularity features of segmented objects; thus, texture features were also used during classification (Wang et al 2019a , b ; Zhao et al 2020 ). Based on these characteristic variables, according to the interpretation of each wetland type (Fig.…”

“…The coastal and estuarine tidal flats have mainly evolved into salt marsh wetlands under the dominant action of certain natural factors. Regional landscape diversity has increased, which has improved the antidisturbance ability of coastal estuarine wetland ecosystems (Cao et al, 2020;Liu et al, 2020;Zhao et al, 2020). However, tidal flats in coastal estuaries are an important element of the land reserve resources of coastal cities, and the evolution of this landscape has been deeply affected by human activities (Lin et al, 2018), which have intensified the evolution of natural tidal flats into diversified artificial landscapes (Zhang et al, 2022).…”
