Recent Insights into the Neurobiology of Impulsivity

Abstract: Impulsivity is associated with various psychopathologies, and elevated impulsivity is typically disadvantageous. This manuscript reviews recent investigations into the neurobiology of impulsivity using human imaging techniques and animal models. Both human imaging and preclinical pharmacological manipulations have yielded important insights into the neurobiological underpinnings of impulsivity. A more thorough understanding of the complex neurobiology underlying aspects of impulsivity may provide insight into … Show more

“…Regarding the four constructs of impulsivity, urgency (e.g., relating to the tendency of responding to negative emotions irrationally resulting in problematic outcomes) has been associated with excessive recruitment of lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity resulting in self‐regulatory failure (e.g., substance misuse) . Lack of premeditation has been associated with decreased gray matter volumes in the insula and putamen and postulated to relate to the efficacy of decision‐making processes . Lack of perseverance or lack of conscientiousness is linked to impaired anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function, and the left ventrolateral and left anterior prefrontal cortices, relating to risky behaviors .…”

“…ADHD is characterized by elevated and persistent levels of inattention, locomotor activity, and impulsivity (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The construct of impulsivity encompasses a wide range of phenomena (Evenden, 1999; Winstanley et al, 2006; Mitchell and Potenza, 2014; Sharma et al, 2013). The variety of impulsivity that characterizes ADHD is often described as a deficit in “behavioral inhibition” (Barkley, 1997; Wodka et al, 2007; Evenden, 1999) and “response inhibition capacity” (RIC; Chambers, Garavan, & Bellgrove, 2009).…”

“…This result is according with the studies even if does not clarify the mechanism of this association [79][80][81][82]. Further studies could investigate the brain connection and the alteration of the regulation system.…”
