Recent insights on chronic heart failure, cachexia and nutrition

Abstract: Altered intestinal function as an agent for CHF is rising in evidence. New techniques to well diagnose and stratify malnutrition and cardiac cachexia in CHF are needed. Treatment of cachexia in CHF appears to be a combination of different approaches, in which metabolic, nutritional, immunological and hormonal strategies may play an important role. Although the current experimental research is of great help, well designed randomized controlled trials are needed to test these hypothesis and generate clinical evi… Show more

“…26,27 Chronic disease and/or cachexia are also associated with anemia and are known to increase SNS, but the patients in our study did not present these states. 28 Finally, we excluded iron deficiency and drug adverse effects. Renin angiotensin system blockers and ␤-blockers are known to be associated with anemia, but their distribution was similar in both groups.…”

“…In addition, patients with CHF and cachexia have a death rate that has been estimated to be as high as 50% over a period of 18 mo (4,5,15). Acquired GH resistance appears to occur in these individuals (4,5,16). In several small randomized trials, GH treatment failed to improve the clinical status of CHF patients (17)(18)(19).…”
