Recent Progress in the Design of Monodisperse, Sequence-Defined Macromolecules

Abstract: This review describes different synthetic strategies towards sequence-defined, monodisperse macromolecules, which are built up by iterative approaches and lead to linear non-natural polymer structures. The review is divided in three parts: solution phase-, solid phase-, and fluorous- and polymer-tethered approaches. Moreover, synthesis procedures leading to conjugated and non-conjugated macromolecules are considered and discussed in the respective sections. A major focus in the evaluation is the applicability … Show more

“…The synthetic approaches toward sequence-defined macromolecules were recently summarized and can generally be divided into liquid-phase approaches, solid-phase approaches, and fluorous-phase or polymer-tethered methodologies, [2] with all their individual advantages and disadvantages. “…[2] For instance, monodisperse oligofluorenes were obtained in an IEG approach (refer to Figure 2) up to the 64-mer stage and their degree of polymerization was correlated to their solid-phase morphology. High degrees of polymerization in these stiff and conjugated molecules were already achieved.…”

“…More recently, an increasing attention has been focused on the precise control of the sequence of polymers. The preparation of sequence‐controlled polymers has been approached through various approaches based on kinetic considerations, catalysis, template chemistry, multicomponent reaction, (macro)molecular design, and iterative synthesis . While the control of the microstructure of polymers still remains a challenge for polymer chemists, the ability to tune the sequence of polymers would be an asset for applications in materials sciences.…”

“…Repetitive coupling of the same building block achieves full conversion; however, this comes at the cost of excess nonconjugated building blocks which end up in the waste. [14][15][16][17] Indeed, several of these strategies rely on the use of solid phase synthesis and the assembly of tailor-made building blocks. per coupling and double couplings are performed, resulting in 40-180 eq.…”
