“…In addition, photocurrent experiments provide information about the stability of holes generated in electron transfer reactions. [ 40 , 46 ] F‐ CD s immediately switched the current to the background level after turning the source OFF. On the other hand, the hole generated in P‐ CD s possesses with 2 s a significant longer stability in the dark period.…”

“…Recent results reported attempts to widen the absorbance and enhancement of electron/hole separation efficiency of CD s by integrating them with a large, conjugated structure to prepare a CD ‐based network with covalent organic frameworks structure. [ 37 , 38 , 39 ] Such CD ‐based networks can be of interest for photocatalysis, [40] photodynamic therapy, [37] and to construct light emitting devices. [38] Nevertheless, almost no attention has been paid to use these materials for photopolymerization.…”

“…Hydrogen Production: According to the literature, CDs only as a photosensitizer enhanced the photocatalytic HER. [141] In 2019, Sargin et al [338] used mushrooms as precursors to prepare CDs by microwave irradiation. When CDs as sensitizers, triethanolamine as sacrificial reagent and metal platinum as cocatalyst in TiO 2 photocatalytic hydrogen production reaction, HER reached up to 1458 μmol g −1 h −1 in 2 h. This could be attributed that VB electrons of CDs moved to the CB of TiO 2 after light absorption and suppressed the severe recombination loss between photogenerated electron and hole of TiO 2 .…”

“…However, the fast compounding of photogenerated electron–hole pairs, the weak absorption of visible light, and the structural defects resulting from incomplete polymerization blocked electron transport in the photocatalytic process, which has seriously affected its development. ,, As another member of the carbon family, carbon quantum dots exhibit excellent photoelectric performance with a size of less than 10 nm, a carbon core with a sp 2 hybrid structure, and a surface rich in oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. , Nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots are photosensitizers with photoluminescent properties that can act as semiconductors to generate electrons and holes . Most importantly, they can be used as electron acceptors or carriers to guide the flow of photogenerated charge carriers, acting as an “electronic bridge”. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) composites modified with nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) are reported to slow down the fast complexation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and improve electron transport. ,, Zhang et al used a hydrothermal method to synthesize NCDs@g-C 3 N 4 composites, which showed significant changes in the specific surface area and void structure, and the degradation rate of methylene blue by this composite was 2 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 . Zhou et al synthesized NCDs/defect-rich g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction materials by a facile impregnation method, and it was seen that the enhanced light response and the inhibition of charge recombination were the main reasons for the increased photocatalytic activity .…”
