Recent progress on novel current collector electrodes for energy storage devices: Supercapacitors

Abstract: Current collectors play a very crucial role in the performance of an energy storage device. Regarding supercapacitors, material design, processing, and current collectors' surface properties can result in substantial variation in energy density, power output, cyclic charge–discharge behavior, and other key performance parameters. Most of the reviews in supercapacitor materials and devices focus on the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical properties of electrode materials. In the present report, the… Show more

“…Nickel, aluminum, and copper are the most common metals that can be used as collector plates. [45][46][47] Silver and gold, which also possess good metallic conductivity, have been used as collector plates even though their use is not economical. Corrosion is one of the main problems when using a metallic foil as a collector plate.…”

“…Such intimate contacts are essential to prevent ohmic losses during the charge transfer between the electrochemically active material and the current collector. In addition, the interaction between the electrode material and current collector affects the power delivery rate, efficiency, and extraction of charge in energy storage devices. Consequently, the approach presented in this paper enables us to fabricate flexible electrodes for supercapacitor devices. The fabricated devices exhibit outstanding energy and power densities and show enhanced chemical and mechanical stability.…”
