Recent Progress on Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks and Their Derivatives in Alkali Metal–Chalcogen Batteries

Abstract: The commercialization of high‐energy‐density alkali metal (Li, Na, and K)–chalcogen (S, Se, and Te) batteries (AMCBs) has been primarily hindered by the volume expansion of chalcogen cathodes during repeated charging/discharging cycles, the shuttling effect of intermediates in the electrolytes, and unstable alkali metal anodes. Owing to their unique structural and physicochemical characteristics, including high specific surface areas, self‐doped N atoms, open pore structure, versatile compositions, and favorab… Show more

“…Chalcogen elements, including sulfur, selenium, and tellurium, have attracted significant interest as cathodes for K batteries due to their high theoretical gravimetric energy densities. 170,171 However, the sluggish reaction kinetics, the large volume change of the chalcogen elements, and the ''shuttling'' of polychalcogenides have been the long-lasting hurdles for practical applications of PCBs. 172,173 Based on our knowledge of lithiumsulfur batteries, high conductivity carbon matrices with large pore volumes have also been devised to host chalcogen elements for PCBs.…”

“…111 Specifically, ZIFs are a kind of porous crystal material with a zeolite topological structure formed by complexing N atoms on imidazole rings to metal ions. 112 ZIFs with different structures can be formed by regulating ligands or ligand types and their interactions. They can be expressed as M(IM) 2 (IM is imidazole and its derivatives, M is a tetrahedral bonded metal ion).…”

“…2 To pursue higher energy density, aggressive chemistries, such as lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and lithium-oxygen, comprising a lithium metal anode (LMA) with a high-capacity cathode are under extensive exploration. [3][4][5][6][7] Thus, Li-S batteries (LSBs) have emerged as one of the most promising candidates owing to their ultrahigh theoretical energy densities of 2600 W h kg −1 and the abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness of sulfur. [8][9][10] Although LSBs show great promise, their wide deployment has been retarded by several intractable challenges.…”
