Recent records of the cypress jewel beetle: Lamprodila (Palmar) festiva (Linnaeus, 1767) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Serbia

Abstract: Lamprodila (Palmar) festiva (Linnaeus, 1767), cypress jewel beetle is a species widespread in the Mediterranean, but has been rapidly expanding North and East over the last decade. It is harmful to plants of the genus Juniperus, Chamaecyparis, Cupressus, Platycladus and Thuja. It attacks both, the healthy and stressed plants and destroys them within 2-3 years. There is lack of information about this buprestid in Serbia, except that heavy damage from it was registered in 2014, without specifying localities of t… Show more

“…Many examples of insect species have altered their ranges and/or evolved as a response to repeated isolation during glacial-interglacial cycles across the Balkan Peninsula [42][43][44][45]. Similar studies on biodiversity in protected areas in Serbia indicate dynamic changes in species distribution due to climate change [46][47][48]. Some of these changes occur faster than we are able to record them, and some protected areas remain understudied and may harbour undiscovered species.…”

“…Šíření druhů hmyzu ve střední Evropě může mít charakter člověkem pod míněné invaze -např. ploštička platanová (Arocatus longiceps Stal, 1872) (Stehlík & Hradil 2000), krasec Lamprodila festiva (Linnaeus 1767) (Jendek et al 2018;Królik et al 2023) nebo zavíječ zimostrázový (Cydalima perspectalis Walker, 1859) (Bras et al 2019). Častěji však jde o samovolnou expanzi a tzv.…”

“…The life cycle of L. festiva is 1-4 years, depending on temperature and humidity. According to existing literature, the adults are active in May-July [10,11], occasionally until August [12]. After mating, the female oviposits in the small cracks of the host plant's bark on trunks or branches, predominantly on the sun-exposed sites [12].…”

After mating, the female oviposits in the small cracks of the host plant's bark on trunks or branches, predominantly on the sun-exposed sites [12].
