Recent Trends in the Iron‐Catalyzed Cyanation Reactions

Abstract: The review focuses on the iron-catalyzed cyanation reaction. This is the first review on this topic and covers literature till 2020 and comprehends all the works published in this field detailing the scope and limitations. The cyano compounds are important organic moiety and are widely used in synthetic organic chemistry; this review aims to help understand the various aspects of Fe-catalyzed cyanation reactions and its scope.

“…Methods that introduce new C–C bonds in molecules exhibiting basic amine functionalities are particularly rare and frequently not general enough for late-stage functionalization of complex substrates. Among the existing methods for C–H functionalization, the α-C–H cyanation of basic amines is particularly valuable, , as the introduced cyanide group can subsequently be converted into various different functionalities. Therefore, α-C–H cyanated amines are valuable synthetic intermediates, for example, for the synthesis of α-amino acids. , …”

“…In this context, a-alkoxynitriles, a protected form of cyanohydrin, are synthetically valuable compounds that can serve as a synthon for many industrially important compounds, e.g., 3-amino-2-alkenenitriles, a-alkoxyketones, etc. 19 The synthesis of a-alkoxynitriles, through cyanation of acetals with trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) in the presence of different Lewis acids, such as BiBr 3 , 20 [Rh(COD)Cl] 2 , 21 SnCl 2 , 22 TiCl 4 , 23 ZnI 2 , 24 BF 3 Á Et 2 O 25 and MgI 2 etherate, 26 has been reported. Other cyanating agents, such as cyanoamine in the presence of trichlorosilyl triflate, have also been used to catalyze cyanation of acetals and orthoesters.…”

“…Nowadays transition-metal-catalyzed reactions have received tremendous interest. Various transition metals such as Fe [ 15 ], Co [ 16 ], Ni [ 17 ], Pd [ 18 ], Cu [ 19 ], Rh [ 20 ] etc. were well explored in cyanation owing to its cost-effective and earth abundant characteristics.…”
