Reciprocal translocation 60,XY,t(8;15) (21;24) in cattle

Abstract: G-band karyotyping of 20 Alpine Grey AI bulls resulted in the detection of a reciprocal translocation 60,XY,t(8;15) (21;24) in 1 bull. The 60-90 days non-return rate of this translocation-bearing bull was very poor (25%).

“…In fact, to date few cases of reciprocal translocations have been reported in cattle [de Schepper et al, 1982;Mayr et Key Words Agerolese breed ؒ Cattle ؒ Chromosome abnormality ؒ Chromosome banding ؒ FISH Abstract A new and unusual reciprocal translocation was detected in a heifer of the Agerolese cattle breed during a routine cytogenetic screening carried out on 13 animals (2 males and 11 females) kept at the ConSDABI Conservation Center in Benevento (Southern Italy). The 13 animals investigated had a normal karyotype except for a 1-year-old female, which carried one autosome smaller than the smallest normal bovine autosomes.…”

“…Hitherto, only five such translocations have been identified (Mayr et al" 1979(Mayr et al" , 1983de Schepper et al, 1982;Ansari et al, 1992). Most of these translocations involved medium-sized to long chromosomes (i.e., chromosomes 2,8.10.…”

“…Known interautosomal reciprocal exchanges are 60,XY,t(10;11)(41;14) in a bull showing a 60-90 days non-return rate of 30 % [11,12], 60,XY,t(2q-;20q),t(8q-;27q) in an infertile bull [15] and 60,XY,t(8;15)(21;24) in a bull with a 60-90 days non-return rate of 25 % [13].…”
