Reclassification of Parapterulicium Corner (Pterulaceae, Agaricales), contributions to Lachnocladiaceae and Peniophoraceae (Russulales) and introduction of Baltazaria gen. nov.

Abstract: The genus Parapterulicium was first introduced to accommodate two Brazilian species of coralloid fungi with affinities to Pterulaceae (Agaricales). Despite the coralloid habit and the presence of skeletal hyphae, other features, notably the presence of gloeocystidia, dichophyses and papillate hyphal ends, differentiate this genus from Pterulaceaesensu stricto. Fieldwork in Brazil resulted in the rediscovery of two coralloid fungi identifiable as Parapterulicium, the first verified collections of this genus sin… Show more

“…The family Peniophoraceae sensu Larsson (2007) formed a strongly supported clade in Russulales and included about 15 genera (Larsson and Larsson 2003; Miller et al 2006; Larsson 2007; Leal-Dutra et al 2018). Except for the coralloid Lachnocladium Lév.…”

“…Whitney, Bandoni & Oberw., all the other genera in the family are corticioid fungi, such as Asterostroma Massee, Peniophora Cooke, Scytinostroma Donk and Vararia . However, recent molecular and morphological studies showed that two species of Parapterulicium Corner with coralloid basidiomata belong to Peniophoraceae in the Russulales rather than Pterulaceae of the Agaricales (Leal-Dutra et al 2018). In the phylogenetic tree, the type species, Parapteruliciumsubarbusculum Corner formed a distinct lineage, while P.octopodites Corner is closely related to Scytinostromagalactinum (Fr.)…”

“…Actiniceps Berk. & Broome was shown within Agaricales to be distantly related to Pterulaceae and Parapterulicium was removed to Russulales (Dentinger and McLaughlin 2006;Leal-Dutra et al 2018). Four resupinate genera were transferred to Pterulaceae: Aphanobasidium Jülich, Coronicium J. Erikss.…”

“…Pterulaceae has attracted more attention recently following the discovery of two distinct symbionts of fungus-farming ants in the genus Apterostigma Mayr being included in several phylogenetic and ecological studies (Matheny et al 2006;Hibbett 2007;Dentinger et al 2009;Binder et al 2010;Leal-Dutra 2015). Despite the absence (hitherto) of any teleomorph, phylogenetic analyses placed both species [Pterula nudihortorum Dentinger and Pterula velohortorum Dentinger, previously known as G2 and G4 (Dentinger 2014)] in a strongly supported clade within Pterulaceae (Munkacsi et al 2004;Villesen et al 2004).…”
