Recognition of posterior circulation stroke

Abstract: Despite being of typical age for multiple cardiovascular conditions the PC-ICH patients less often have a previous history of AF or dyslipidemia than IS patients do. The vomiting PC-ICH patient with hypertensive BP values often has headache and a red flag for hemorrhage is warfarin treatment.

“…In previous studies, the most frequent stroke subtype was LAA in AIPC group (5,6,7,8,9,10 Mortality in hospital was significantly higher in AIPC group compared to AIAC group in our study. Otherwise, there was no significant difference in follow up mRS scores and recurrent stroke prevalence between two groups.…”

“…As acute treatment and secondary prophylaxis aimed at anterior circulation infarction (ACI) have advanced, this has not been the case for posterior circulation infarction (PCI) . Randomized controlled trials on acute management of ischemic stroke often exclude patients with PCI, and thus, best treatment approach is still not ascertained . There is a higher risk of recurrent stroke after vertebrobasilar events compared with carotid events, and yet, no intervention comparable to endarterectomy for carotid stenosis is established for vertebrobasilar stenosis .…”

“…However, in addition, several previous studies comparing PCS and ACS have proposed different patient characteristics regarding demographics, cardiovascular risk factors and stroke aetiology specific for the stroke territory [5][6][7][8][9] . Overall, patients suffering a posterior circulation ischaemic stroke tend to be younger [6][7][8]10 and more often male compared to ACS patients [5][6][7][8]11 . Diabetes was more frequent in PCS, whereas atrial fibrillation was more common in ACS [6][7][8]11 .…”
