Recognizing Common Skin and Soft Tissue Infections in the Nephrology Clinic

Abstract: Renal failure patients have an increased risk of infection, including skin and soft tissue infections. This increased susceptibility is multifactorial, due to the conditions causing the renal failure as well as complications of treatment and renal failure’s innate effects on patient health. These infections have a significant impact on patient morbidity, increased hospital and procedural demands, and the cost of health care. Many renal failure patients are seen regularly by their nephrology clinic caregivers d… Show more

“…57 The risk of wound complications is further increased if the patient has concomitant diabetes mellitus. 58 Patients with ESRD also have an increased risk of perioperative bleeding and requiring blood transfusions, as highlighted in a meta-analysis by Acedillo et al 59 The increased risk of perioperative bleeding can be attributed to ESRD-related platelet dysfunction and coagulopathy, as well as the presence of abnormal venous collaterals in the chest wall due to CVOD. The incidence of postoperative complications reported in our study, such as surgical site infections, appears to be consistent with other studies that evaluated postoperative complications in cardiothoracic surgery.…”

“…Patients with ESRD require dialysis for survival and have a higher risk of infection due to multiple factors, including a combination of immune system dysfunctions from uremia, as well as complications associated with their required vascular access [ 10 , 11 ]. In the ESRD population, infectious disease is considered the second leading cause of mortality, only behind cardiovascular disease [ 12 ].…”
