“…The production of [ 11 C]CN − was first demonstrated in 1941 via the reduction of [ 11 C]CO 2 by potassium metal in the presence of ammonia in a sealed tube at 600 o C . Later, [ 11 C]CN − was produced in a furnace from [ 11 C]CH 4 in the presence of ammonia over platinum wire, or directly in a recoil synthesis in a gas target charged with nitrogen and 1% hydrogen via a 14 N(p,α) 11 C reaction . The automated production of [ 11 C]CN − in 2 steps from [ 11 C]CO 2 was described by Iwata, and it is this process that is incorporated in the process cabinet of the GE radiochemistry system.…”

“…Carbon-11-labeled N-alkyl-p-iodobenzenesulfonamides were prepared as follows. Carbon-11-labeled HCN was produced by cyclotron bombardment of a 99% N 2 -1 % H 2 gas target with 22 MeV protons using procedures and equipment described previously (2). To confirm that the chemical species containing the radioactive isotope after cyclotron bombardment of a 99% N 2 -1 % H 2 target was H 1X CN, the gas carrying the radioactivity was bubbled through an aqueous solution containing 85 mg (0.5 mmole) of AgN0 3 .…”

“…Hydrogen cyanide -11 C has been produced in 100 mCi batches by proton irradiation of 5% hydrogen, balance nitrogen (3,12) . The HcN-has been used to lable red blood cells as follows.…”

“…Chromium-48 has also been made by irradiating Ti02 enriched to 80% in Ti-47 when the yield of Cr-48 was increased to 12_/xCi / /Aa/h and the Cr-51 impurity was reduced to 1.3%. 300 mCi amounts of hydrogen cyanide "^C have been produced by irradiating nitrogen, 5% hydrogen mixtures with 14 MeV protons, similar to the method of Lamb et al (3). We have found a Pyrex glass tube to work as well as a quartz one but the temperature of the tube must be not less than 350°C and the oxygen content of the target gas must be a miniumum (typically 10 ppm) otherwise CO2 is produced.…”
