“…Sleep diaries have been used to demonstrate sleep disturbances in patients with mTBI relative to matched controls [47], as well as to measure treatment response to sleep treatments such as cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia (CBTI) [48,49]. Sleep diaries offer the advantage of prospectively capturing sleep-wake patterns and behaviors that may interfere with or promote sleep, including the regularity of bed times and rise times, the frequency, timing, and duration of daytime naps, use of prescribed or nonprescribed stimulants (e.g., energy drinks, caffeine) or central nervous system depressants, including alcohol, and other relevant behaviors.…”

“…In insomnia research, it is well established to differentiate between both concepts as clinical criteria, as patients with primary insomnia complain about excessive fatigue during the day, but not about sleepiness as defined above [80]. Because the meaning of both terms differs between languages, the assessment of fatigue and sleepiness is even more difficult.…”

“…Only one study [23] used a more detailed and comprehensive measure of sleep difficulties, the PSQI [31]. This instrument has good psychometric properties and has been recommended for assessing sleep disturbance as an outcome in intervention studies [35].…”

“…Only one study [23] used a comprehensive self-report measure of sleep in the form of the PSQI [35], a measure which has previously been recommended for use in CFS [38]. However it has been suggested that using an abbreviated version of the PSQI without the item of daytime dysfunction would better assess subjective sleep quality, as demonstrated by three-factor analysis of the questionnaires [39].…”
