Reconciling Cladistic and Genetic Analyses in Choreotrichid Ciliates (Ciliophora, Spirotricha, Oligotrichea)

Abstract: Fifty-six features of halteriid, oligotrichid, and choreotrichid ciliates are cladistically analysed, including an updated hypothesis about the evolution of the somatic ciliary patterns. Based on its morphology, Lynnella clusters with Parastrombidinopsis, Parastrombidium, and Strombidinopsis, while it is basal to the other choreotrichids in the molecular phylogenies. The two clusters of Favella species in small subunit rRNA gene trees are supported by morphological features, justifying a separation at genus an… Show more

“…Tintinnids, in contrast with other groups of planktonic ciliates, for example, “oligotrichs,” are, but a single order even among competing ciliate classification schemes. According to traditional ciliate taxonomy, and in agreement with recent molecular studies (Agatha and Strüder‐Kype ; Bachy et al. ; Saccà et al.…”

“…22, 23, 27). Complex ciliary patterns (Agatha and Strüder‐Kypke ) are observed, which have one monokinetidal ventral, one dikinetidal dorsal, and one dikinetidal posterior kinety, as well as a right, left, and lateral ciliary field (Fig. 22, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33).…”

“…Laval‐Peuto and Brownlee long ago argued that to correctly classify tintinnid species various approaches should be employed such as observation of cytology, and even non‐morphological characteristics such as ecological and behavioral data (Laval‐Peuto and Brwonlee ). Recently, several studies have discussed the usefulness of combined molecular analysis, cytological studies, and observation of lorica ultrastructure (Agatha ; Agatha and Strüder‐Kypke ). All these lines of evidence will likely be needed to unambiguously place Cymatocylis among tintinnids.…”

“…About 1200 species are in the literature (Agatha and Strüder-Kypke, 2012); virtually all are restricted to the marine plankton. The diameter of the mouth-end of the lorica, lorica oral diameter (LOD), is a conservative taxonomic character (Laval-Peuto and Brownlee, 1986).…”
