Reconfigurable Computing for Tool-Path Computation

Abstract: Abstract. Tool path generation is one of the most complex problems in Computer AidedManufacturing. Although some efficient strategies have been developed to solve it, most of them are only useful for 3 and 5 axis standard machining. The algorithm called Virtual Digitising computes the tool path by means of a "virtually digitised" model of the surface and a geometry specification of the tool and its motion, so can be used even in non-standard machining (retrofitting). This algorithm is simple, robust and avoids… Show more

“…The tool allows last grading to be automatically performed for more than one size at once, and also allows the selection among different sizing systems and, within them, the choice of gender/age, length and width of the target size. Once the last grading file is obtained, the last can be manufactured using whatever of the existing CAD/CAM approaches [13,14]. This approach did not describe in detail the equations employed to grade the last, but highlighted that the grading is performed proportionally.…”

“…In a previous work [15], we presented a study about the theoretical impact of HW on the VD algorithm using FPGA-based technology. Also a proposal for a hybrid hardware/software (HW/ SW) implementation of the transformation operator used in the VD algorithm can be seen in [16] and preliminary experimental results are shown in [17].…”
