Reconnaissance for radioactive deposits along the upper Porcupine and lower Coleen Rivers, northeastern Alaska

Abstract: The highest equivalent-uranium co'ntent found in the sedimentary rocks on the upper Porcupine River, northeastern Alaska, is 0.005 percent. Rhyolitic dikes associated with a granitic intrusive a few miles north of the Porcupine, along the international boundary, contain about 0.006 percent equivalent uranium, which is attributed to small amounts of disseminated radioactive accessory minerals. The granite also is slightly radioactive.

“…Similar reconnaissance in Alaska (White, 1952;Wedow, 1954) revealed several Precambrian and Paleozoic black shales containing 0.001 to 0.003 percent uranium, but only the phosphatic black shale near the base of the Calico Bluff formation of Mississippian age was found to contain more, generally between 0.003 and 0.006 percent uranium.…”

“…38) contain a little gold, but not in minable concentrations. In 1948, White (1952a conducted a brief reconnaissance for radioactive deposits during which he found traces of uraniferous minerals, one of which was tentatively identified as clarkeite, in stream-concentrate and bedrock samples from a tributary of the Rapid River (6, fig. 38) and from Sunaghun Creek (7, fig.…”
