Reconsideration of the clinical and histopathological significance of angiogenesis in prostate cancer: Usefulness and limitations of microvessel density measurement

Abstract: Angiogenesis plays important roles in tumor growth and cancer cell dissemination in almost all cancers. In prostate cancer, there is general agreement that increased angiogenesis is an important factor in determining tumor development and prognosis in these patients. Microvessel density is recognized as a useful marker for evaluating the angiogenic status of cancer tissues. Many investigators have reported that microvessel density is significantly associated with pathological features and outcomes in prostate … Show more

“…Various antibodies were found to be associated with prognostic factors in some of the studies while some of the studies support the opposing opinions. Miyata et al explained the reason for this discrepancy with different methodology of measuring MVD in cancers (10). In order to determine the MVD in our study, the hot spot method of Weidner et al, has been used (5).…”

“…Coexistence of a myelolipomatous lesion and a hemangioma is uncommon, with only one reported case. 2 We present a case of a cavernous hemangioma associated with a myelolipomatous metaplasia in the adrenal gland. A 77-year-old man was referred to the Department of Urology at Shinonoi General Hospital, Nagano, Japan, for treatment of a left adrenal tumor.…”

“…2 They paid attention to the reasons for the conflicting MVD results, such as differences in population size, the pathological background, the antibody used for detection endothelial cells, the counting method, personal experience and selection of the tumor area. 2 However, MVD is substantially limited by the highly irregular geometry that the microvascular system assumes in "real space." Angiogenesis is a dynamic process that is discontinuous in "space" and "time."…”
