Reconsidering the Effectiveness of Scientific Tools for Negotiating Local Solutions to Conflicts between Recreation and Conservation with Stakeholders

Abstract: The conflict between the conservation of biodiversity and recreation activities in the European landscape is intensifying. Managers of large nature areas are confronted with increasing numbers of visitors and decreasing biodiversity values. To accommodate the visitors while simultaneously protecting the biodiversity values they need to make changes in the landscape. Current legislation, a lack of knowledge on the recreation-biodiversity relationship, and the diverging point of view of stakeholders make it diff… Show more

“…In the New Forest, UK, Pouwels et al (2011) used modelgenerated maps in a mediation between two conflicting interests: species conservation and recreation. With a group consisting of representatives of nature conservation organizations, park management and visitor groups, they explored how the conflict could be mitigated by reallocating the visitor distribution pattern.…”

“…For example, properties such as naturalness, accessibility, species richness and vegetation structure have been variously used to score the importance of areas for recreational satisfaction and management (e.g., Horne et al, 2005;Shelby et al, 2005;Pouwels et al, 2011;Edwards et al, 2012;Paracchini et al, 2014). Furthermore, Lindemann-Matthies et al (2010) produced experimental evidence of a relationship between plant diversity (a property of the studied grassland systems) and peoples aesthetic pleasure (a value).…”
