Reconstructing Earth's surface temperature over the past 2000 years: the science behind the headlines

Abstract: The last quarter century spans the publication of the first assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 1990 and the latest report published in 2013-2014. The five assessment reports appearing over that interval reveal a marked increase in the number of paleoclimate studies addressing the climate of the last 2000 years (the Common Era). An important focus of this work has been on reconstruction of hemispheric and global temperatures. Several early studies in this area generated consid… Show more

“…Research on the climate of the Common Era (CE) has exploded in scope and extent over the last 2 decades (e.g., Jones et al, 2009;Masson-Delmotte et al, 2013;PAGES 2k Consortium, 2013;Schmidt et al, 2014;Luterbacher et al, 2016;Smerdon and Pollack, 2016;Christiansen and Ljungqvist, 2017;PAGES2k Consortium, 2017). Multiple developments have driven this expansion:…”

“…Knowledge about past climate variability is important for placing recent warming in a historical context (Atwood et al, ; Christiansen & Ljungqvist, ; Frank et al, ; Masson‐Delmotte et al, ; Smerdon & Pollack, ; Snyder, ). Proxy‐based climate reconstructions and model simulations are sources for quantifying past climate variability, and both provide insights into Earth system responses to external forcing (solar, volcanic, and orbital) and changes in atmospheric composition (Büntgen et al, ; Esper, Büntgen, et al, ; Hegerl et al, ; Ljungqvist et al, ; Masson‐Delmotte et al, ; Schneider et al, ; Schurer et al, , ).…”
