This article investigates the presence of multilingualism as an academic practice within the field of research in multilingualism by examining the citation practices of research publishing in key English-language journals in the field. It investigates how researchers make use of material published in other languages as a component of their research writing and thus of their conceptualisation of the field of research to determine to what extent multilingualism itself is actually present in multilingual research communicated in English. This article argues that, although some research published in languages other than English may be cited in multilingualism research, multilingualism as a visible research practice is largely absent from the study of multilingualism. This means that research into multilingualism largely constructs multilingualism as a subject to be studied from a perspective that lies outside the phenomenon of multilingualism itself and normalises monolingualism as the standard form of academic practice within the English-speaking world. It can therefore be argued that multilingualism research is a site in which a monolingual habitus predominates and that this represents an epistemological dilemma for the field.

The study of discourse, or situated linguistic communication, has been mainly dominated by Westcentric perspectives, models, approaches and issues. In this article, I argue that it is not only necessary but also possible to construct Asian paradigms of discourse studies as a new speaker in critical dialogue with the Western mainstream. After pointing out the limitations of Western discourse analysis, I outline the foundations for the paradigmatic articulation in terms of the textual and contextual characteristics of Asian discourses on the one hand and the Asian cultural and intellectual resources on the other hand. In conclusion, I suggest future agendas for the construction of the envisaged Asian paradigms of discourse research.

The term "critical", as used by scholars writing under the banner of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), is in need of review in a new global intellectual environment in which diverse philosophical and political traditions are increasingly in contact with one another. This essay is particularly concerned with the question of how a shared understanding of the concept of the critical can be developed among Western and Chinese scholars. To this end the paper gives an overview of notions of critique in the historical traditions of China and the West, addressing issues of conceptualisation, discourse practice and translation. This leads us to consider, from a "critical" point of view, what the appearance of the "critical" approach may mean in the Chinese context. The need for continued dialogue oriented to a deepened understanding of existing ideas and approaches is highlighted.
