Reconstructing Six Decades of Surface Temperatures at a Shallow Lake

Abstract: Lake surface water temperature (LSWT) plays a fundamental role in the lake energy budget. However, direct observations of LSWT require considerable effort for acquisition and hence are rare relative to a large number of lakes. In lakes where LSWT has not been covered sufficiently by in situ measurements, remote sensing and lake modeling can be used to produce a fine spatio-temporal record of LSWTs. In our study, the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LSWT was used to compare with in situ dat… Show more

“…Numerical models that are calibrated specifically for the conditions of a single lake often reach about the same accuracy (e.g., Weber et al, 2017), while models that are not specifically calibrated (e.g., occasional local temperature measurements) will show greater deviations. Alternative methods, such as satellite imaging and thermometry, only provide sporadic measurements and do not reach a similar accuracy without additional support from numerical models (Zhang et al, 2020). Lake Rassnitzer See is situated in 31 km distance south west of the study area and was previously called "Mine Pit Lake Merseburg-Ost 1b" (Heidenreich et al, 1999).…”

“…The thermal regime is a key factor in the regulation of the biogeochemical cycle and in the development of algal blooms. The worldwide intensification of harmful algal blooms over the past decades (Paerl and Huisman, 2008;Paerl and Paul, 2012;Wagner and Erickson, 2017) is often associated with climate change and nutrient enrichment (Zou et al, 2020;Huisman et al, 2018).…”

“…O'Reilly et al [2] attributed this trend in the temperature of the water surface to the rapid annual increase in air temperature (with a mean of 0.25 • C decade −1 ). Zhang et al [3] attributed the increase in the temperature of the water surface to the increment in the air temperature and the wind velocity reduction.…”
