Reconstruction of equidistant color space from responses of visual neurones of macaques

Abstract: We demonstrate that a combination of responses of various types of spectrally opponent sustained cells of the macaque lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) may be related to equidistant color space. Response curves of such cells to stimuli of different luminance ratios and wavelengths are similar to the first stage opponent coordinate functions of the new SVF color-difference formula [T. Seim and A. Valberg, Color Res. Appl. 11, 11 (1986)]. Mathematical simulation of the responses of these cells to a variety of col… Show more

“…AM/L cells do not operate along the axis required of a Hering type, red-green opponent channel, and although phasic cells may be involved in some detection tasks, their phasic responses and limited dynamic range make them unsuitable as a counterpart for an achromatic brightness channel. It is possible to reconstruct colour scaling systems quite well, however, assuming a linear combination of opponent cell outputs alone (Valberg et al 1986b). …”

“…was invited to join this team. Our recordings from opponent cells in the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of the macaque monkey (Macaca fascicularis) led to a physiological model of color vision that accounts for several color phenomena and psychophysical data (Valberg et al, 1986a;Lee et al 1987).…”
