Reconstruction of Lower Eyelid with Nasolabial Flap for Anterior Lamella and Turnover Flap for Posterior Lamella

Abstract: Reconstruction of full-thickness eyelid defects is done to provide a mobile lid with corneal protection, having good aesthetic quality, and acceptable donor site morbidity. Various flap procedures have been described and used for the lower eyelid reconstruction; however, the nasolabial flap is rarely employed. It is a random pattern cutaneous flap with redundant blood supply from the perforating branches of the facial and angular arteries and can be used as an inferiorly or superiorly based flap. Here, we aim … Show more

“…K. Yamashita et al [18] and V. Malviya et al [19] analyse various methods of eyelid defects reconstruction, including the use of ear cartilage grafts. Particular attention is paid to high aesthetic effect and reliable support, which is not accompanied by visible atrophy or dissolution of the graft, helping to avoid eyelid retraction and other complications.…”

“…Compared with other autografts, auricular cartilage is thin, relatively abundant, easy to harvest, and has minor donor site morbidity [ 68 ]. Reconstruction of eyelid defects with auricular cartilage grafts shows an aesthetic contour and sufficient support without obvious graft shrinkage or absorption, which prevents eyelid retraction and other complications [ 69 71 ]. However, these grafts lack an inner lining for conjunctival reconstruction, and irritation due to direct contact between the eyeball and the raw surface of the graft remains a concern [ 67 ].…”

“…Skin and the orbicularis muscle make up the anterior lamella, whereas the tarsal plate and conjunctiva make up the posterior lamella. 2 There are several choices for reconstruction, [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] depending on the depth, position, and size of the lower eyelid defect. In addition, there may be numerous combinations of reconstruction techniques, depending on how each lamella reconstruction method is used (Fig.…”
