Reconstruction of the Right Atrium and Superior Vena Cava with Extracellular Matrix

Abstract: We describe our technique for reconstructing the free right atrial wall and superior vena cava using CorMatrix (CorMatrix Alpharetta, GA, USA) extracellular matrix following resection of a large leiomyosarcoma.

“…6 This material has been used for a variety of cardiac surgical applications, including reconstruction of the atrium after tumor resection in an adult. 7 Use of this material for atrial reconstruction in an infant, as in our case, has not been reported. We favored this material in this young patient because of its flexible handling, hemostatic properties, and potential for native tissue regeneration and growth, given the large amount of right atrium replaced.…”

“…The decellularized extracellular matrix serves as a scaffold that allows cells to reside from adjacent tissues 5 . CorMatrix biomaterials have been used in more than 80,000 cardiac procedures, including but not limited to the repair of atrioventricular valves, aneurysms involving the AVF, aortic root enlargement, and remodeling of the right atrium and superior vena cava 6 11 .…”

“…The first case report describing the successful use of CorMatrix ECM 1 patch for reconstruction of the free right atrial wall and superior vena cava following resection of a large leiomyosarcoma was published by Szczeklik et al 28 Recently, a small case series has been published by our group describing a successful reconstruction of cardiac structures with SIS-ECM patches following tumor resections (huge left atrial myxoma, right atrial leiomyosarcoma right atrial metastasis of malignant melanoma). 29 This report demonstrates the acellular xenogeneic SIS-ECM membrane (CorMatrix ECM 1 , CorMatrix Cardiovascular, Inc.) as an excellent alternative material to synthetic or biological (pericardial) substitute materials to treat various cardiac defects.…”
