Recovery of descriptive information in images from digital libraries by means of EXIF metadata

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present a study case of the digitization of documents kept by the Reino de Valencia Archive and its description and recovery through EXIF metadata from the digital images obtained. The control of digital images, in terms of identification of their number and the batches they belong to, can be achieved by naming the digital file with digits that the user can identify.Design/methodology/approachThe paper's objective is to provide image descriptions far better than by naming… Show more

“…Most archives and libraries are digitizing their batches of metadata for preservation and diffusion. The digital format is in the highest demand and, therefore, the need to better exploit the possibilities that the digital image provides is clear, as far as the insertion of metadata and descriptions is concerned, since providing an image description is far better than naming the file (Romero et al, 2008) Records metadata is structured information that identifies, authenticates, and contextualizes records, and the people, processes, and systems that create, manage, maintain, and use them, and the policies that govern them. While some records' metadata is captured at the point of the record's creation, metadata continues to accrue over the life of the record.…”

“…After importing the SfM survey images, Agisoft Metashape performs an automatic calibration process in accordance with the exchangeable image file format (EXIF) [58] detected in the images. The process was described by Westoby et al [59], from photo alignment to post-processing with mesh generation.…”

“…There is a huge number of works focusing on the different types of metadata in pictures, for search and classification purposes [2,3,16,17]. As stated before, these techniques, though simplest, depend on the quality and quantity of metadata the maker decides to introduce.…”
