In this research, ab initio calculations and experimental approach were adopted to reveal the mechanism of Hg 0 adsorption on MoS2 nanosheets that contain various types of defects. The ab initio calculation showed that, among different structural defects, S vacancies (Vs) in the MoS2 nanosheets exhibited outstanding potential to strongly adsorb Hg 0. The MoS2 material was then prepared in a controlled manner under conditions, such as temperature, concentration of precursors, etc., that were determined by adopting the new method developed in this study. Characterisation confirmed that the MoS2 material is of graphene-like layered structure with abundant structural defects. The integrated dynamic and steady state (IDSS) testing demonstrated that the Vs-rich nanosheets showed excellent Hg 0 adsorption capability. In addition, ab initial calculation on charge density difference, PDOS, and adsorption pathways revealed that the adsorption of Hg 0 on the Vs-rich MoS2 surface is non-activated chemisorption.

A series of Mn/γ-Al2O3 and MnMo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by using Incipient Wetness Impregnation (IWI) method. The catalytic performance tests showed that the Mn3Mo1.25/γ-Al2O3 demonstrated a higher SCR performance (NO conversion of around 96%) at a broad low temperature range (150 to 300°C). The characterization showed that the addition of Mo to the Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalysts could promote the dispersion of MnOx on the surface of γ-Al2O3. The adsorption of NO could form two different species, nitrites and nitrates on the surface of the catalyst. The presence of nitrites is beneficial to low temperature SCR. It is also found that the existence of Mo in the catalyst favours the formation of Mn 3+ , which plays a critical role in the adsorption of NH3 and therefore improves NH3 adsorption capacity of the MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts. The low temperature SCR of the Mn3Mo1.25/γ-Al2O3 catalyst was found to mainly follow L-H mechanism, but E-R mechanism also plays a role to some extent. Moreover, it is also found that the addition of Mo not only mitigates the deactivation of catalysts, but also broadens the effective temperature range of the SCR catalyst.

Two commercial diatomaceous earths were used as supports for the preparation of Mn/Co binary metal catalysts at different metal loads (5 to 10 wt % Mn and 5 to 15 wt % Co) by incipient wetness deposition. The activity of the prepared catalysts towards the complete oxidation of benzene to CO 2 and water was investigated between 100 and 400 • C. Raw supports and synthesized catalysts were characterized by XRD, N 2 physisorption, SEM-EDS, H 2 -TPR, and TPD. The purification treatment of food-grade diatomite significantly affected the crystallinity of this support while reducing its specific surface area (SSA). A loss of SSA, associated with the increase in the metal load, was observed on samples prepared on natural diatomite, while the opposite trend occurred with food-grade diatomite-supported catalysts. Metal nanoparticles of around 50 nm diameter were observed on the catalysts' surface by SEM analysis. EDS analysis confirmed the uniform deposition of the active phases on the support's surface. A larger H 2 consumption was found by TPR analysis of natural diatomite-based samples in comparison to those prepared at the same metal load on food-grade diatomite. During the catalytic oxidation experiment, over 90% conversion of benzene were achieved at a reaction temperature of 225 • C by all of the prepared samples. In addition, the formation of coke during the oxidation tests was demonstrated by TGA analysis and the soluble fraction of the produced coke was characterized by GC-MS.
