Recovery of Lithium from Oilfield Brines—Current Achievements and Future Perspectives: A Mini Review

Ewa Knapik,
Grzegorz Rotko,
Marta Marszałek

Abstract: In recent years there has been a significant increase in the demand for lithium all over the world. Lithium is widely used primarily in the production of batteries for electric vehicles and portable electronic devices, and in many other industries such as production of aluminum, ceramics, glass, polymers, greases, and pharmaceuticals. In order to maintain the balance between supply and demand for lithium on the global market, it is essential to search for alternative sources of this element. Therefore, efforts… Show more

“…The increasing demand for scarce resources (lithium) is prompting exploration of alternative sources, like saltwater and generated water, necessitating continuous technological advancements for extraction. Several reviews have investigated methods for cleaning up oil and gas waste [22][23][24], but very few have looked at how to safely recover lithium from the generated water [25,26]. Therefore, the objectives of the current review are: (1) to investigate current treatment options for extracting lithium from oilfield PW, (2) to review the international lithium market, and (3) to focus on the hybrid treatment approach for extracting lithium from oilfield PW.…”
