Recovery of uranium and copper from mineralized dolostone, Gabal Allouga, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt

Abstract: To avert excessive sulfuric acid exhaustion in the classical leaching procedure and to avoid leaching of other undesirable impurities, proper alkaline leaching has been achieved for dolostone of Gabal Allouga, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt. The relevant factors for alkaline leaching of a technological sample assaying 1.2% Cu and 0.15% U were examined using a mixture of Na 2 CO 3 / (NH 4) HCO 3 solution upon two samples namely; roasted sample at 540°C and raw materials un-roasted. The leaching kinetic results showe… Show more

“…These different reasons may explain the interest of the research community for developing techniques for processing of ores (hydrometallurgy and leaching), and recovery of uranyl from aqueous solutions. Depending on the geological origin of the uranium-bearing ores, leaching may be processed using alkaline [1] or an acidic route [2]. However, in most cases the metal is extracted by acidic leaching [3][4][5].…”

“…Mn, Zn, Co, Cu, Ni, V, U, and REEs) in addition to Al (the main resource). Gibbsite ore contains REE (⁓ 776 ppm) and U (⁓ 257 ppm) [14,16]. The value of Gibbsite ore material is gaining popularity, not only for the purpose of recovering uranium and/or precious metals, but also for other advantages such as reducing the environmental effect of mining residue deposits [4].…”

“…[11] The previous study for selective recovery of uranium and copper from the dolostone raw material at Abu-Thor locality of southwestern (SW) Sinai. [12] The winning of uranium from its ores is generally accomplished by two hydrometallurgical processes: the acid and the alkaline leaching processes. The choice between acid and alkaline leaching is largely dictated by the type of mineralization of the ore under consideration.…”
