Recurrence of COVID-19 after recovery ? A case series in health care workers, France

Abstract: We describe 3 cases of coronavirus disease 2019 in health care workers in France involving presumed clinical and microbiological recurrence after recovery. All patients were immunocompetent with clinical mild form. These cases highlight the possibility of coronavirus disease–recurrence.

“…On the other hand, the high number of HCWs with mild-to-moderate symptoms in our cohort could be explained by the young age of patients with no underlying comorbidities. The hypothesis that prolonged and repeated exposure to SARS-CoV-2 contributes to a higher viral load in this population has already been discussed in the literature [ 22 ], but this theory seems unlikely as exposure to infection leads to immunity in most cases. On the other hand, post-traumatic stress disorder, peritraumatic dissociation, and anxiety disorders may occur more frequently in HCWs due to the caring responsibilities in this epidemic context [ 9 , 23 ].…”

“…This is particularly important, as the reinfection of COVID-19 is not uncommon [ 6 , 7 ]. Cavanaugh and colleagues (2021) reported that among previously infected individuals, those who were not vaccinated were twice as likely to be re-infected compared to those who were fully vaccinated [ 8 ]. Another study reported that those who were unvaccinated had 2.6 and 5.3 times, respectively, higher rates of incidence and hospitalization due to COVID-19 compared with those who were fully vaccinated [ 9 ].…”

“…The main symptoms reported were asthenia, chest pain, cough and dysgeusia (n = 8, n = 5, n = 4, n = 4, respectively). However, the cases of resurgence of symptoms described in the literature remain rare and present very variable clinical characteristics, ranging from simple flu-like syndrome [47,48] to ARDS leading to death [49]. In the literature the resurgence seems to be related to viral reactivation [47][48][49][50].…”

In the literature the resurgence seems to be related to viral reactivation [47][48][49][50]. In COVEVOL it was based on clinical data, by self-reported symptoms, and not virological data.…”
