“…Forleo et al [10] reported that women undergoing AF ablation are older, have longer AF history and more comorbidities, however, they found no differences in AF recurrence compared with men. This observation is consistent with other results showing that women have higher rate of AF/AFl recurrence after cardioversion [11]. This is interesting especially when compared with a suggestion of Kerr and Humphries [12] that successful interventional treatment might be particularly useful to improve the quality of life in women with AF.…”

“…When a patient's ECG documentation had not been obtained, an episode of PAF was decided if the patient's history revealed a symptomatic episode of a rapid, grossly irregular heart beat lasting at least 10 min. 18 Twelve-Lead Surface Electrocardiogram P-wave duration was calculated in all simultaneously recorded 12 leads of the surface ECG. P-wave duration measurements were obtained manually by two of the investigators blinded to the history of patients by using calipers and a magnifying lens for accurate definition of the ECG deflection as defined in previous studies.…”

“…Evidence that women may be more symptomatic than men during atrial fibrillation comes from data by Hnatkova et al, 28 who found that in women the duration of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes was found to be longer and the heart rate higher than in their male counterparts. Suttorp et al 29 have published data suggesting that maintenance of sinus rhythm may be more difficult in women after cardioversion, whether chemical or electrical. As will be discussed more fully below, women tend to experience proarrhythmias from antiarrhythmic therapy more frequently than men, which can complicate the medical management of their atrial fibrillation.…”
