“…In a retrospective analysis of admissions across the United States of America, same-admission recurrence prophylaxis (including medical pleurodesis, VATS or open surgery) when compared with no further intervention, was associated with a lower rate of recurrence, readmission and odds of mortality both in-hospital and at follow-up [ 54 ]. Causality cannot be assessed in this study, and there is invariably selection bias that will influence who was chosen to undergo prophylaxis procedures.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, a recent report by Wang et al analysed how often there were same‐admission recurrence prophylaxis (SARPs) performed in SSP admissions in the US. Chest tube insertion was performed in 66.98% of SSP admissions, 34.3% received SARP and 20.43% of patients received a conservative management without recurrence of SSP [ 12 ]. Therefore, as a take‐home message, a conservative management strategy might be considered in patients with SSP who complain of shortness of breath without haemodynamic instability.…”

“…The caveat for this study was the absence of pleurodesis for surgical management of SSP. Wang et al [24] evaluated in a retrospective study the effect of same admission pneumothorax recurrence prophylaxis (SARP) in SSP patients, which comprised VATS, open surgery or medical pleurodesis. SARP was associated with lower mortality, lower all-cause readmission, and lower pneumothorax recurrence in SSP admissions.…”
