Abstract: Absorbable tack fixation of the mesh was associated with a higher risk of recurrence than non-absorbable tacks for laparoscopic mesh repair of incisional hernia, but did not influence chronic pain.

“…This concept has not been validated neither in regard of recurrence-or complication rates. In fact only one cohort study on incisional hernia based on questionnaires from a registry has been published; showing increased risk of recurrence with absorbable compared to permanent tacker of 28.5% vs. 18%, respectively [136]. The risk of prolonged pain after mesh fixation is still not solved, and the absorbable tacker fixation does not seem to improve this, according to this report.…”

“…We do not know if this actually decreases pain or has a negative impact on the long-term outcome. Only one study has been published on the subject, a register study indicating a higher risk of recurrence with absorbable tackers and no benefit regarding chronic pain [136].…”

“…All studies used a minimum mesh overlap of 3–5 cm. Thirty studies reported the percentage of patients at last follow‐up, with a median of 98 (range 76–100) per cent. Follow‐up was given as either a mean or median value, with an overall median of 22 (range 6–64) months.…”
