Abstract:Extraretinal circuits can shape visual center-surround interactions that originate in the retina, yet the contributing circuit mechanisms to this initial modulation remain elusive. Using an optogenetic-based approach applied to the superficial layers of the superior colliculus (SCs), we demonstrate that the SCs is sufficient in generating surround suppression through selective patterned activation of visual center and surround zones in individual neurons. Like in the primary visual cortex, surround network act… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
