Recurrent intracranial solitary fibrous tumor with cerebrospinal fluid dissemination

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a benign and rare neoplasm. To date, only 37 patients with intracranial SFTs have been reported. Although a number of the tumors were recurrent and some later underwent malignant transformation, none of these lesions progressed to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination. In this paper the authors report a case of SFT in which the lesion recurred several times and ultimately was disseminated by the CSF. The patient was a 63-year-old woman with multiple intracranial and spinal tum… Show more

“…Multiple recurrences have led to regard meningeal HPC as a distinct entity from intracranial SFT. Nevertheless, in spite of the several statements that intracranial SFTs have a benign clinical behavior [10,21], there are many cases of intracranial SFT that have recurred and even manifested distant metastases [9,[22][23][24][25][26], as to indicate that the two conditions are clinically very similar.…”

“…These tumors were considered to have benign histopathological features at onset, and anaplastic or malignant transformation resulting from multiple recurrences has been reported in only four patients. [2][3][4][5] To our knowledge, a primary anaplastic variant of SFT has not been reported. Thus, we present a patient with a pathologically confirmed primary anaplastic SFT arising from the tentorium cerebelli (TC).…”

“…The chemotherapeutic agent Toremifene can also be administered if the proliferation rate is high (10). Recurrence and also malignant transformation have been reported in meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (6,11,16,20,21). Hakan et al, in their review, have come across a higher rate of recurrence in tentorial tumors that they have attributed to the incompleteness of resection (5).…”
