Recurrent Pseudomonas Folliculitis

Abstract: Pseudomonas aeruginosa has attracted the attention of the dermatologic literature through repeatedly reported outbreaks of folliculitis occurring in small epidemics related to contaminated whirlpools, hot tubs, and swimming pools. In contrast, sporadic cases without these recreational exposures may present a diagnostic challenge. Two sisters, age 8 and 4 years, had sporadic Pseudomonas folliculitis. It is important to recognize the organism as the cause of this recurrent, papulopustular, follicular eruption on… Show more

“…Pseudomonas aeruginosa was first described as causing folliculitis associated with the recreational use of water facilities in 1975 by McCausland and Cox [1] who reported the skin condition following the use of a public whirlpool [2]. Since then pseudomonas folliculitis has been reported following use of whirlpools [3][4][5][6][7], hot tubs [8], swimming pools [8,9], saunas [9] and water slides [10].…”

“…P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen reported in pool and spa environments [8-10]. Cases of folliculitis caused by P. aeruginosa were first described in the mid-1970s in association with exposure in a whirlpool [11-16] and later also in association with hot tubs [17], swimming pools [18], saunas [18] and water slides [19]. Typical manifestations of the infection include swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), hot tub rash (folliculitis) and hot foot syndrome (plantar skin eruptions) [8,19,20].…”
