Recurrent spontaneous rupture of the urinary bladder

Abstract: SUMMARYOnly 5 cases of recurrent spontaneous bladder rupture have been reported in the literature. T h e present report is of a patient who developed a spontaneous rupture on two occasions within 5 years. T h e first rupture was treated without bladder suture. A pelvic fracture 12 months before the first episode is considered to be a probable aetiological factor.

“…In this case, the bacterial cystitis was so severe, and surgical intervention was desirable. Wheeler [ 10 ] mentioned the possibility of rerupture of the thin scar of the postrupture site after conservative therapy and the importance of intermittent urinary catheterization or bladder catheter placement for decompression [ 10 ]. In our case, both the diagnosis and the treatment were performed during the operation, and the good postoperative course without rerupture can be attributed to the prompt intervention and proper decompression.…”

“…Initially, considering the overall survival of the patient, surgery might be preferable, however, the patient declined the surgery because of the invasiveness. Although long-term bladder catheter placement had the risk of urinary tract infection or recurrent bladder rupture [37], the patient underwent insertion of a bladder catheter, leading to no recurrence.…”
