Recurrent thrombosis in an HIV-1 infected child

Abstract: Though thromboembolic complications in HIV infected patients have been described in literature, recurrent thrombosis is very rare. We present a six-year-old HIV infected boy who presented with recurrent thrombosis. He initially had renal artery thrombosis, then middle cerebral artery thrombosis and finally hepatic vein thrombosis that was fatal.

“…Furthermore, HIV infection did not influence the development of antiphospholipid antibodies as we document 13 of 116 infected to have aPL and 6 of 61 HIV-negative patients to have aPL (χ 2 = 0.49, p = 0.78). thrombosis in children was reported by Shah, et al [16] with reduced CD4+ lymphocyte counts (< 200 cells/µl), presence of opportunistic infections, neoplasms, or autoimmune disorder such as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia as events predisposing to thrombosis.…”

“…Antiphospholipids stimulated by the infection have been declared as being occasional (non-pathogenic) [8]. Most aPLs among HIV-infected patients have been reported as being transient outcomes and case reports [27]. Accidentally, our findings explored 12 aPL cases among HIV Sudanese patients.…”
