“…Mantle xenoliths and lavas were crushed for noble gas and CO 2 isotopic determinations following the same methods and analytical procedures described in Rizzo et al (2018), Rizzo et al (2021), Sandoval-Velasquez et al (2021a), and Sandoval-Velasquez et al (2021b. After crushing, samples were sieved with the aim of hand-picking crystals (with diameters >0.25 mm) of Ol, Opx, and Cpx from mantle xenoliths and only Ol crystals from lavas.…”

“…Our hypothesis points to the existence of a refertilized mantle whose Ar-CO 2 systematics have been modified by the introduction of air-derived noble gases and crustal materials inherited from the extinct Farallon subduction. We rely on noble gas and CO 2 isotopes (coupled to petrological evidence), which are unique geodynamic tracers of the degassing history of the mantle, of the origin of Earth's volatiles, of the relationship between different mantle components, and of the nature and signature of metasomatic fluids in the mantle (Deines, 2002;Dunai and Porcelli, 2002;Gurenko et al, 2006;Dasgupta and Hirschmann, 2010;Day and Hilton, 2011;Day and Hilton, 2020;Correale et al, 2012, Correale et al, 2015Rizzo et al, 2018;Li et al, 2019;Sandoval-Velasquez et al, 2021a;Sandoval-Velasquez et al, 2021b;Bekaert et al, 2021).…”

“…The 3 He/ 4 He ratio has been monitored at Dos Aguas CO 2 ‐rich cold mineral spring in La Palma Island (henceforth DA, Figures 1d and 1e) since 1991 and represents a long‐term volcano monitoring tool able to provide early warning of future volcanic unrest episodes. DA is located at the bottom of Taburiente caldera (Figure 1d) which, in terms of noble gases, is the only location in the Canarian archipelago where it is possible to identify a primordial component of the Canary mantle source (Day & Hilton, 2020; Hilton et al., 2000; Pérez et al., 1992, 1994; Sandoval‐Velasquez et al., 2021; Torres‐Gonzalez et al., 2020). DA exhibits a 3 He/ 4 He ratio >9 R A , where R A = 1.384 × 10 −6 is the 3 He/ 4 He atmospheric ratio (Clarke et al., 1976).…”

“…The hot spot or mantle plume theory extrapolates the model of creation of Hawaiian volcanism to Canary volcanism, that is, a magmatic flow that is injected from the mantle to the crust, forming the islands in the vertical of this focus (Sandoval-Velasquez et al 2021). Among the thermal theories is the theory of the blob or "bubble" model, which is based on a series of magma droplets or bubbles that underlie the archipelago, which are injected into the lithosphere to produce volcanic events.…”

“…On the other hand, the propagating fracture theory links the formation of the islands to the Moroccan Atlas Mountains through a shear fault. The uplifted block theory argues that compressional tectonics led to crustal thickening, causing the uplift of the blocks that formed the islands (Sandoval-Velasquez et al 2021). Finally, the unified model tried to integrate tectonic and thermal theories to explain the complexity of the formation of the Canary Islands (Sandoval-Velasquez et al 2021).…”
