Red Blood Cell Folate Insufficiency among nonpregnant Women of Childbearing age in Guatemala 2009 to 2010: Prevalence and predicted Neural Tube Defects risk

Abstract: Background The World Health Organization recently released recommendations stating that red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations should be above 400 ng/L (906 nmol/L) for optimal prevention of folate-sensitive neural tube defects (NTDs). The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of folate insufficiency (FI) (<906 nmol/L) and potential risk of NTDs based on RBC folate concentrations among nonpregnant women of child-bearing age in Guatemala. Methods A national and regional multistage clus… Show more

“…Consistent with a recent report from Guatemala (Rosenthal et al, ), gaps were present in folate concentrations between rural and urban women: Urban women had higher folate concentrations than rural women. Moreover, rural women had a higher proportion of folate insufficiency than urban women, replicating findings from our previous study (Liu, Gao, et al, ).…”

“…This is an important public health concern (30). The prevalence of RBC folate insufficiency was slightly higher than that reported by Guatemala (47.2%) (43) but was much higher than that reported by the United States (22.1%) (27). Thus, with Belize’s voluntary folic acid fortification program, there is a high prevalence of folate deficiency and insufficiency.…”

“…In addition to harmonizing MBA assay conditions and using assay‐matched cutoffs, the global assessment of folate status in WRA requires simplified data analysis and modeling approaches and greater consistency in the presentation of data to allow comparisons across countries. Modeling approaches used in some of the key studies detailed in this report are complex and may be challenging to utilize extensively. Further, RBC folate concentrations are variably presented as mean, geometric mean, or median values along with or in lieu of the prevalence of deficiency/insufficiency in published survey reports .…”
