Red Misfits in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: properties of star-forming red galaxies

Abstract: We study Red Misfits, a population of red, star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. We classify galaxies based on inclination-corrected optical colours and specific star formation rates derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. Although the majority of blue galaxies are star-forming and most red galaxies exhibit little to no ongoing star formation, a small but significant population of galaxies (∼11 per cent at all stellar masses) are classified as red in colour yet actively star-forming. W… Show more

“…The KS test shows that the distributions of clustercentric distances of red star forming galaxies, and galaxies in rich and poor groups are statistically similar, with p-value p > 0.12. This agrees with earlier findings that red star forming galaxies in superclusters can be found in groups of various richness, they may also be central galaxies of groups (Wolf et al 2005;Einasto et al 2008Einasto et al , 2014Evans et al 2018, and references therein).…”

“…To explore the connection on this trend for these two different population of galaxies, we have checked that low-mass red isolated galaxies with a SFN at high Q LSS are also star-forming galaxies. This population of red and star-forming galaxies in the Local Universe is known as Red Misfits (Evans et al 2018), a transition population to the red sequence, where the quenching is dominated by internal processes rather than environmentallydriven processes. Then it would be somehow expected to find this population in isolated galaxies.…”

“…Environmental quenching is often used to explain the morphology-density relation, whereby red bulge-dominated galaxies are more likely to be found in dense environments, and blue disc-dominated galaxies are more commonly found in underdense environments (Oemler 1974;Dressler 1980;Lewis et al 2002;Goto et al 2003;Gómez et al 2003;Balogh et al 2004;Yang et al 2007;Bamford et al 2009). Although there are some exceptions to these trends -such as blue ellipticals (Schawinski et al 2014) and red spirals (Masters et al 2010;Evans et al 2018) -the general bi-modality of galaxy colour and morphology holds true.…”
