Redescription of poorly known species of Ceratothoa Dana, 1852 (Crustacea, Isopoda, Cymothoidae), based on original type material

Abstract: Due to the difficulty in accurately identifying cymothoids, these parasitic isopods are often incorrectly named or confused with other species. Within the genus Ceratothoa, a number of recent studies have aimed at clarifying some of the problematic species; however, several of the less studied species still require revision. This paper redescribes, from type material, several poorly known Ceratothoa species including Ceratothoa angulata, Ceratothoa capri, Ceratothoa carinata, Ceratothoa collaris, Ceratothoa gi… Show more

“…verrucosa (Fig. 1C), 32.7 mm in total length (TL) and 16.5 mm in body width (BW), is morphologically characterized by an oval body, wide anterolateral projections on the first pereonite, uneven dorsal surface of the anterior pereonites, and short uropods not extending to the posterior margin of the pleotelson, which correspond to the description of female given by Shiino (1954) and Hadfield et al (2016). The male (Fig.…”

“…Isopods were processed according to the techniques described in Hadfield et al (2010, 2013). Descriptions were prepared using DELTA (Descriptive Language for Taxonomy, Coleman et al 2010) using a general character set for the Cymothoidae (Hadfield et al 2014, 2016). Ratios and measurements were rounded off to one decimal place and were made using maximum values of the specific measured article.…”

“…Type material was not dissected and all isopods were processed according to the techniques in Hadfield et al (2010, 2013). The cymothoid species descriptions were prepared in DELTA (DEscriptive Language for TAxonomy) format using a general Cymothoidae character set used previously (see Hadfield et al 2016). Isopod classification follows that of Brandt and Poore (2003) and host nomenclature was sourced and verified from FishBase (Froese and Pauly 2017) and Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2017).…”
