Redescriptions of two frequently recorded but poorly known hemiurid digeneans, Lecithochirium musculus (Looss, 1907) (Lecithochiriinae) and Ectenurus lepidus Looss, 1907 (Dinurinae), based on material from the western Mediterranean

Abstract: Two frequently reported but poorly known hemiurid digeneans, Lecithochirium musculus (Looss, 1907) (Lecithochiriinae), from the stomach of Trachinus draco and Citharus linguatula, and Ectenurus lepidus Looss, 1907 (Dinurinae), from the stomach of Spicara maena, are redescribed based on material from off the Barcelona coast of the western Mediterranean. The two species are commented upon, and Lecithochirium israelense Fischthal, 1980 is considered a synonym of L. musculus. Records of the… Show more

“…The parasites occurring in both species were digenean larvae, early stages of cestode larvae, Anisakis typica and Hysterothylacium sp. The discovery of these parasites in both fishes examined is in accordance with the generalist lifestyle of the parasites and their records from various teleost hosts (e.g., Klimpel & Rückert, 2005 ; Carreras-Aubets et al, 2012 ; Kuhn et al, 2013 ). Anisakis typica is the dominant Anisakis species in tropical shelf regions ( Mattiucci et al, 2002 ; Kuhn et al, 2013 ).…”

“…monoceros (Monacanthidae), and A. thazard (Scombridae) with only the latter record rooted in DNA sequence data. Based on the studies to date, species of Lecithochirium exhibit the full range of host specificities [ 10 , 13 , 21 , 54 ]. In addition to L. floridense and L .…”

“…In addition to L. floridense and L . synodi , several other species of the genus, namely: L. bothi, L. genypteri, L. kawaka, L. musculus , L. microstomum , L. monticellii , L. rufoviride , and L. furcolabiatum , have been demonstrated to infect a variety of fishes from more than one family [ 10 , 13 , 21 , 27 , 31 , 90 ].…”

“…In the present study it was found to have an intermediate prevalence, 27.6%. This is a somewhat generalist parasite that occurs in a number of different hosts, but its definitive hosts are mainly carangids (Carreras-Aubets et al , 2012). Metacercariae of Ectenurus sp.…”
