Redetermination of the thermodynamic properties of the solid–solid transition of adamantane by adiabatic calorimetry to investigate the suitability as a reference material for low-temperature DSC-calibration

Abstract: Sub-ambient calibration of DSCs is a problem because there are few reference substances, and every available substance has its drawbacks. One of the possibilities is the low-temperature solid-solid transition of adamantane. High-accuracy adiabatic calorimetry results are, however, only available from one source. Therefore it was decided to measure the transition with our adiabatic calorimeter. Although our results show some deviation from the results reported in the literature source -our transition temperatur… Show more

“…Thermal analyses aim to investigate the thermal behavior of compounds submitted to variations of heating and cooling in a controlled manner as defined in 2006 by the International Confederation for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry [47]. TG evaluates mass losses due to heating as a function of time and therefore, has been used to identify the formation of ICs as evident changes in the mass loss profile are observed when a CD complexes with a host molecule [37].…”

“…The measurements and data analysis were carried out using Proteus software (Netzsch, Germany). Calibration of DSC instrument was performed using the solid-solid transition temperature of adamantane (-64.5°C), and melting points of indium (156.6°C), tin (231.9°C), bismuth (271.4°C), and zinc (419.5°C) as a standards [12,13]. About 4-5 mg of each sample was placed and sealed in 40-lL standard aluminium crucible with a pierced lid.…”

“…The heating and cooling rates were both equal to 20 K min −1 . The temperature scale was calibrated with the help of indium 42,43 and adamantane 43 standards and the heat flux values with a powder aluminium standard. [44][45] 3.…”
