Rediscovery of relict populations of the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus in south-eastern Mauritania, with observations on their natural history

Abstract: In 1998 and 1999, relict populations of the Nile crocodile Crocodylus niloticus were rediscovered in south‐eastern Mauritania, 70 years after the last reports of their existence and 6 years after the IUCN Species Survival Commission listed them as extirpated in that country. Crocodiles were found in four different types of wetlands, herein described. Preliminary observations on their natural history and their interactions with humans are provided, and the main threats and the prerequisites for their protection… Show more

“…In contrast to other African regions, villagers from Mauritanian mountains peacefully accept crocodile presence in gueltas [8], [9], [60], [78] and even consider their potential for local economy by launching crocodile-watching activities [60]. Moreover, C. suchus in Mauritania constitutes a good candidate umbrella species, since it's conservation is tied to other aquatic or semi-aquatic organisms (e.g.…”

“…Several scientific expeditions to Mauritania were developed from 2000 onwards [27][31] which reported the presence of crocodiles in three southern Mauritania massifs: Tagant, Assaba and Affolé (Figure 1). Populations are best known in the Gabbou basin, on the northern face of the Tagant mountains, where they are present in 26 isolated localities [29], [31].…”

“…But outside this river basin, knowledge on distribution is scarce. In the Affolé, crocodiles are known from four localities [27], [28], and in the Assaba, references date from before the 1970s [18], [32]–[34]. In the Tagant, crocodiles are mostly found in two major habitat types [29]–[31]: 1) rocky pools, locally known as guelta , generally located upstream of narrow valleys at the base of the mountains.…”
