Redistribution of Lymphocytes Following E. coli Sepsis

Abstract: Infusion of endotoxin elicits lymphopenia and a transient granulocytopenia followed by granulocytosis in peripheral blood. The purpose of this study was to investigate which tissues the lymphocytes are redistributed to in response to endotoxaemia. Lymphocytes were isolated from the peripheral blood of 20 rabbits, labelled with 111Indium-tropolene and reinjected intravenously into the rabbits. Ten rabbits received an infusion of Escherichia coli endotoxin 2 micrograms/kg-1, while 10 rabbits received isotonic sa… Show more

“…For example, circulating lymphocyte numbers fall peri-operatively [15][16][17], possibly due to a decrease in the lymphocyte proliferation rate [18,19] or a redistribution of lymphocytes from the peripheral blood to the body compartments [20]. We also found that peripheral lymphocyte counts fell significantly after surgery.…”

“…Apoptosis and clearance from the circulation have been suggested in some experiments (31,32). There are also reports that lymphocytes redistribute from peripheral blood and spleen to mesenteric lymphoid tissue or accumulate in various organs (8,33). It is unknown why and into which tissues peripheral blood lymphocytes disappear.…”

“…For example, lymphocyte activation via superantigens induces systemic release of cytokines resulting in T-cell-dependent septic shock and severe lung injury (31). Alternatively, lymphocyte may indirectly cause damage following secretion of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines (31)(32)(33)(34).…”

“…Bacterial infections, among other infectious diseases are more important for left shift occurrence [72,73]. Glucocorticoids increase lymphocyte sequestration and apoptosis [74][75][76], some secreted cytokines in bacterial and viral infections also cause lymphopenia [77][78][79]. Reactive lymphocytes are antigen stimulated lymphocytes which their size and their cytoplasmic basophilia were increased [73].…”
