Redox Status in Very-Low Birth-Weight Newborns

Abstract: Inborn metabolic diseases, such as disorders in pyruvate metabolism, in gluconeogenesis or in the respiratory chain, may present with lactic acidosis in newborn infants. A simple tool to screen for the efficacy of mitochondrial oxidation reduction activity is the detection of the redox status through simultaneous measurements of plasma lactate, pyruvate and ketone bodies, which are strongly influenced by feeding and stress. We present the redox status values of 55 very-low birth-weight infants under different … Show more

“…To evaluate whether TPM can modify the cellular oxidation reduction potential through the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes, 19 we performed at 24 and 48 hours of hypothermia, respectively (after 1 and 2 doses of TPM), a redox status study with measurements of plasma lactate, pyruvate, ß-hydroxybutyrate, and acetoacetate levels on deproteinized arterial blood with spectrophotometric assay (COBAS FARA; Roche, Basel, Switzerland). 20 Clinical Course and Concomitant Treatments A central venous line was placed in all patients. Fluid intake was started at 60 to 70 mL/kg and increased by 10 to 20 mL/ kg each day, on the basis of changes in body weight and serum electrolyte levels.…”

“…[16]. Переход в условия инкубато-ра и искусственной вентиляции сопровождается резким увеличение напряжения кислорода в крови ребенка и появлением в его крови продуктов перекисного окис-ления [16,17]. При этом механизмы антиоксидантной защиты недоношенного ребенка значительно менее раз-виты, чем у доношенного [17], поэтому оксидативный шок и влияние его на процессы метилирования ДНК рассма-тривают как важный эпигенетический фактор [16,17].…”

“…Significantly, there is a marked change in the redox state and oxygenation from a relative hypoxic and markedly reduced fetal state to a highly oxygenated extra-uterine life. 12,13 These changes are accompanied by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and consequently changes in metabolism to compensate for the oxidant insult. ROS can cause oxidative modification of major cellular macromolecules, that is, lipids, proteins and DNA.…”
