Redox Status of Postmenopausal Women with Single or Multiple Cardiometabolic Diseases Has a Similar Response to Mat Pilates Training

Abstract: Postmenopausal women have a high prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases and that may associate with higher oxidative stress. Exercise can contribute to the treatment of such diseases, but some modalities, such as Mat Pilates, need to be further studied in terms of their physiological responses. Our aim was to investigate the effects of 12 weeks of Mat Pilates on redox status in postmenopausal women with one or multiple comorbidities of cardiometabolic diseases. Forty-four postmenopausal women were divided into… Show more

“…In general, the efficacy of such an alternative resistance-based exercise mode on cardiovascular risk factors in previously inactive overweight and obese individuals has been poorly investigated, and there is no robust evidence concerning the comparative efficacy of different exercise types in this research area [ 70 , 71 ]. However, the main results presented here are in agreement with those reported for overweight/obese individuals with comorbidities after following various Pilates-based exercise interventions [ 37 , 49 , 77 , 78 , 79 ].…”

“…Therefore, Pilates training has been defined as a therapeutic or preventive exercise intervention [ 29 ]. On the other hand, only few studies investigated the role of Pilates training in cardiorespiratory fitness [ 34 ], body composition [ 35 , 36 ], and cardiometabolic [ 37 , 38 ] and mental health [ 39 ] in various populations. It is worth noticing that Pilates training mainly attracts physically inactive, middle-aged women who are primarily interested in improving physical fitness (e.g., body posture and flexibility) and secondarily in rehabilitation (e.g., pain and disability reduction) while demonstrating some pain or musculoskeletal discomfort [ 40 ].…”
