Reduced creatinine clearance in primary osteoporosis in women

Abstract: We determined the relationship between bone mass and age, anthropometric variables, and serum and urine biochemical variables in 77 normal white women and 37 women with primary osteoporosis, 25 of whom had one or more vertebral compression fractures. Skeletal status was assessed by radiography of the hands with measurement of combined cortical thickness of the second metacarpal bones (CCT) or measurement of radial and lumbar bone density, or by both methods. Radial bone mineral content (RBMC) was measured by s… Show more

“…Previous studies have investigated the associations between renal insufficiency and BMD, but the results were conflicting [8,9,10,11,12,13,34,35,36]. A few small studies have indicated that renal insufficiency is related to low bone mass [8,9,10,11,12,13], but data from more extensive studies have indicated that such an association could be explained by confounding factors, primarily sex, age, and weight [34,35,36]. …”

“…Furthermore, individuals with renal insufficiency may also exhibit reduced BMD as a result of vitamin D-parathyroid hormone (PTH) homeostasis and metabolic acidosis [7]. Previous studies have reported that kidney dysfunction is associated with BMD [8,9,10,11,12,13]. However, because of small sample sizes and the result that the associations disappeared after adjusting for key confounders, such as sex, age and weight, the significance of those findings is uncertain.…”

“…However, data on BMD in the population with mild renal dysfunction are scarce. Although several studies have demonstrated the association between renal function and BMD in the population without significant renal disease, their results are inconsistent and even conflicting (6-16). Some studies showed that decreased renal function is associated with lower BMD (6, 7, 9-11, 15, 16), whereas, others failed to show the relationship between them (8, 12, 14).…”

Some studies showed that decreased renal function is associated with lower BMD (6, 7, 9-11, 15, 16), whereas, others failed to show the relationship between them (8, 12, 14). Besides the differences in the study population and the methods for calculating renal function and BMD measurements, the methods of adjustment for potential confounders such as age, sex and body weight affected the study results and caused discrepancies (11, 12).…”

“…Previous studies have reported that there is a significant positive correlation between hip BMD and the calculated renal function in elderly individuals [15]. In addition, a strong positive linear association between lumbar spine BMD and creatinine clearance, which is primarily independent of the body surface area and age, has been demonstrated [26]. A Japanese study, moreover, demonstrated significant positive correlations between BMD at the femur neck and radius and the eGFR among postmenopausal women with mild CKD (stage 2: 60 ml/min/1.73 m 2 ≤ eGFR < 90 ml/min/1.73 m 2 ) and furthermore showed that women with vertebral fractures had lower eGFR than those without vertebral fractures in stage 2 CKD [27].…”
